SK Hynix and Seagate partnering up in enterprise SSD JV.

South Korea’s SK Hynix Inc. is teaming up with Seagate Technology to bolster its presence in solid-state drive (SSD).

SK Hynix, seeks a 51:49 joint venture (JV) with Seagate Technology with it holding the bigger interest. SK Hynix said it was looking into various options to strengthen its mid and long-term competitiveness of non-volatile storage (NAND) flash, but declined to confirm the talk of a joint venture. Seagate also has not disclosed any details.

SK Hynix commanding the second place in the memory market trails behind Samsung Electronics, Toshiba and Micron in NAND chips. Samsung Electronics maintains leadership in SSD.

Strategic partnership would be a win-win for both as Seagate would secure stable NAND chip supplies from SK Hynix while the Korean chipmaker would have access to storage solutions of the U.S. company. Samsung used to command the second largest stake in Seagate, but sold the shares earlier this year.
